Judges’ Off to Their Annual Meet in Entebbe

KAMPALA-21 February 2015: Hon.\r\nJudges converge at the Imperial Golf View Hotel, Entebbe for the 17th\r\nAnnual Judges Conference under the theme: "The Role of the Judiciary in\r\nTransforming Uganda’s Society”.

\r\n\r\n

The four-day Conference from 23-26 February 2015 will\r\ncover wide-ranging issues on the role of technology in the administration of\r\njustice, Judges’ role in promoting investment and development in Uganda,\r\nperformance, change management and accountability.

\r\n\r\n

Discussions are also expected to extend to issues of\r\neffective management of stakeholder relationships and the management of\r\nelection disputes for the 2016 General Elections.

\r\n\r\n

It is hoped that the Hon. Judges will walk out of the\r\nmeeting with a charter of reforms to make the Judiciary more efficient,\r\neffective and responsive to the development needs of Uganda.

\r\n\r\n

The Hon. Judges will also build consensus on issues\r\naround institutional and individual targets, building partnership with the\r\nprivate sector, as well as promoting improved relations with the other arms of\r\ngovernment, among others.

\r\n\r\n

The Judiciary judicial officer staffing presently stands\r\nat eight (08) Justices for the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal/Constitutional\r\nCourt (12), High Court Judges (49), Registrars (22), Chief Magistrates (46),\r\nGrade One Magistrates (163), and Grade II Magistrates (72).

The Hon, the Ag. Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Steven\r\nKavuma, said at the Opening of the New Law year in January, 2015 that four more\r\nJustices are required at the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal (20) – to support\r\nplans to decentralize it to other regions. He said at least 33 more Judges are\r\nrequired by the High Court, 17 registrars, 50 chief magistrates and 40 more\r\ngrade one magistrates – all in line with the structure/courts’ expansion plan.
